Activity Introduction

As mentioned earlier in this course, integrating math into your CTE course requires considerable planning and collaboration with math teachers and industry partners, but CTE teachers can begin making progress toward integrating math by enhancing individual lesson plans. This culminating activity provides you the opportunity to apply what you have learned in this course to one of your existing CTE lesson plans.

Select a Lesson Plan

Before you begin, look through some of your existing lesson plans for upcoming lessons and select one to begin integrating math. Review your selected lesson plan and highlight math concepts embedded in the instruction. Where does math naturally occur? Remember not to force math into the lesson. You don't need to get specific at this point. Just identify where you might be able to pull out and enhance the math that already exists in the lesson.

Incorporating the Seven Essential Elements

Evaluate the Effectiveness

Once you have integrated math into your lesson plan and identified the strategies you will use, conduct the lesson with your students! Consider asking a math teacher or CTE teacher experienced at integrating math to observe you and provide honest feedback.

Remember to take the time to evaluate the effectiveness of the lesson. You could use one of the techniques described in this course to obtain student feedback, but you should also reflect on your performance and the lesson content yourself. Did one part of the lesson take more time than you expected? How could you modify the instruction so that it is more time-efficient?

Were your selected strategies effective? How do you know? What observations did you make? Make the necessary adjustments for the next time and incorporate lessons learned into future math-integrated lesson plans.
