Word problems, models and more!

**The students will engage in group activities to solve word problems with and without models as well as writing equations. **

Solving Equations and Inequalities

Students will be divided into four groups and work on their assigned task to become an expert. They will match vocabulary terms with definitions and examples, use the “Pass the Pen” strategy to create and solve equations or inequalities, or write a real-world problem for an equation given. The experts will then teach these concepts to their peers.

Mission Possible—The Hierarchy of Polygons

The students participated in three missions that required them to independently classify two-dimensional quadrilaterals in a hierarchy of sets and subsets using a graphic organizer based on their attributes and properties.

Perfectly Proportional Percents

Students will collaborate to explain verbally how to solve percent proportions and scaling while showing their thinking.

Express Yourself

Students determine which expression is a truth or a lie by generating equivalent expressions.

Colorful Fractions

**Students will represent fractions in multiple ways, such as pattern blocks, fraction strips, and number lines.**

Keep Your Balance!

**Students are introduced to solving one-variable, one-step equations using addition and subtraction through models and hands-on activities. The students will learn the substitution method of checking answers.**

Perfecting Percents

Students will engage in an activity that allows them to explore the different parts of percents: part, whole, and percent, and develop conceptual understanding of percents through the Concrete, Representational, Abstract (CRA) method of instruction.

The Great Classroom Escape

Students will work collaboratively to solve six real-world multiplication problems and earn puzzle pieces they can put together to reveal a phone number they can call to escape the classroom.

Roll With It

Students will experience a hands-on lesson regarding ratios. While doing this, students will deepen their understanding of the concepts of ratios.

Who Ate More - Fractions on a Number Line

In this activity, students will consider a real-world scenario requiring them to compare two fractional amounts using a number line. Through the use of the number line and peer collaboration, students will recognize equivalency in the two fractional quantities and effectively communicate their understanding of this concept.

Using Theoretical and Experimental Probability to Make Predictions

Given an event to simulate, the student will use theoretical probabilities and experimental results to make predictions and decisions.

Decoding Word Problems

**This lesson focuses on multi-step word problems involving division along with addition or subtraction. The students chunk word problems into each individual step and learn how to choose a familiar strategy. **

What Goes In, Must Come Out

**Students will learn how to use an input-output table using real-world examples.**

Trip to the Theme Park

Students will work on a real-world based project in class involving multiplication of decimals requiring budgeting skills.

Analyzing Data Using a Dot Plot

Students will construct a dot plot using data collected on the faces of a cube after it is rolled. Students will then use a key to change the data to represent a larger population.

Modeling and Solving Two-Step Equations

Students will use various materials to create models of two-step equations. Then, they will take an equation, create their own model, and solve for the variable from the model.

Does Paper Have Volume?

Students will be involved in a problem-solving lesson to determine if paper has volume, find the volume of a piece of paper and a ream of paper, and determine how many pieces of paper will fit inside their classroom.

Discovering the Ratio of Pi

Students will discover the ratio of *pi* by relating the circumference to the diameter of various circles. Students will use this ratio to approximate the formulas for circumference.
