Knowledge and Skills Statement

Inquiry and research: listening, speaking, reading, writing, and thinking using multiple texts. The student engages in both short-term and sustained recursive inquiry processes for a variety of purposes.

Observe students during discussions. In first grade, research will be significantly guided by an adult. A simple way to assess students’ abilities regarding this SE is to score students using a rubric.

Sample rubric:

  1. The student is unable to ask or answer questions for informal or formal inquiry.
  2. The student is able to answer questions, but had difficulty staying on topic or asking purposeful questions.
  3. The student is able to answer questions and ask questions about a topic, but the questions did not align directly with the inquiry process.
  4. The student is able to answer questions and generate questions for informal and formal inquiry.

Inquiry is the act of seeking information by questioning. It is also known as the process of investigating a topic of interest to find out more about it. In first grade, inquiry can be informal (e.g., students have a discussion about a topic of interest and share their thoughts using background knowledge) or it can be formal (e.g., students work with a graphic organizer to collaboratively generate a question about a topic that they plan to further investigate).
