Developing and sustaining foundational language skills: listening, speaking, reading, writing, and thinking--beginning reading and writing. The student develops word structure knowledge through phonological awareness, print concepts, phonics, and morphology to communicate, decode, and spell.

Students should be able to use their knowledge of diphthongs to recognize them in words and read them correctly. Students should know that a diphthong is a combination of a strong vowel (a, e, o) and a weak vowel (i, u). The following are examples of words with diphthongs, bueno, ciudad, cuidar, or auto. When a word with a diphtong is divided into syllables, the vowels that make the diphthong are always in the same syllable: tie-rra, cau-sa, Au-ro-ra, rei-na.
When students demonstrate phonetic knowledge, they review content and determine how principles of sound-symbol relationships and spelling patterns have been put into action. Students will do this when decoding words they encounter in various formats from activities in the classroom to stories they read for pleasure.
Students should be able to use their knowledge of hiatuses to recognize them in words and read them correctly. Students should know that there are two types of hiatuses. Formal hiatuses are composed of two strong vowels (a, e, o). The following are examples of words with formal hiatuses, creer, tri-neo, or toalla. Accented hiatuses are composed of a strong and a weak vowel (i, u). The following words have accented hiatuses, venía, distraído, baúl. When a word with a hiatus (formal or accented) is divided into syllables, the vowels that make the hiatus are never in the same syllable: to-a-lla, cre-er, ve-ní-a, dis-tra-í-do.
