Knowledge and Skills Statement

Composition: listening, speaking, reading, writing, and thinking using multiple texts--writing process. The student uses the writing process recursively to compose multiple texts that are legible and uses appropriate conventions.

Students are expected to understand that collective nouns name groups of people or things. Students should understand when the collective noun is representing a group acting in unison, making the noun singular, or when the collective noun is representing a group whose members are acting individually, making the noun plural. Students will be able to apply the correct verb form to the collective noun. The following is an example of a collective noun representing a group and the corresponding verb in singular form, La gente miraba sorprendida el espectáculo. An example of a collective noun representing a group whose members are acting individually is the following, Las personas se formaron en línea. In this example the plural noun (Las personas) is in agreement with the plural form of the verb (formaron).
During the editing stage of the writing process, students further improve their drafts and often prepare for publishing by correcting conventions errors. Ensuring that the standard rules of the Spanish language have been applied correctly helps the audience to more easily comprehend the information because they are not having to interrupt their thinking to determine what the writer intended to say.
