Knowledge and Skills Statement
Multiple genres: listening, speaking, reading, writing, and thinking using multiple texts--literary elements. The student recognizes and analyzes literary elements within and across increasingly complex traditional, contemporary, classical, and diverse literary texts.
Demonstrated Proficiency of ELA.1.8.D
After reading a story, consider the following:
- Ask students to draw the setting.
- Ask students to name and describe the setting (what it looked like, how it influenced the story, how they know).
- Give students three choices to identify the location of the setting (e.g., “Does the setting take place in the zoo, park, or forest?”).
- Ask students to explain how the story would be different if the setting changed.
The range of responses can vary, so it is helpful to have a rubric to determine mastery of the skill.
- The student is unable to name the setting.
- The student is able to give the name of the setting in simplistic terms (e.g., outside or inside).
- The student is able to name the setting, explain how he figured it out, and describe with detail what the setting looks like (e.g., a park with swings, lots of kids, a sidewalk, slide, and giant tree).
- The student is able to describe the setting in great detail and explain how the story would be different if the setting changed.
