The student is expected to develop handwriting by accurately forming all cursive letters using appropriate strokes when connecting letters.

Knowledge and Skills Statement

Developing and sustaining foundational language skills: listening, speaking, reading, writing, and thinking--beginning reading and writing. The student develops word structure knowledge through phonological awareness, print concepts, phonics, and morphology to communicate, decode, and spell.

Use a rubric to monitor progress by observing handwriting during classwork, reviewing handwriting in a notebook, or collecting a portfolio of student writing samples.

Sample rubric:

  1. The student is developing cursive letters in isolation and is using incorrect strokes to form the letters.
  2. The student is developing cursive letters in isolation, but is using correct letter strokes, so he or she is unable to connect letters to form legible words.
  3. The student is forming cursive letters correctly with correct strokes and is attempting to connect the letters to form words but 4) cannot do so consistently.
  4. The student is forming cursive letters correctly with correct strokes and is able to connect letters to form words.
Students should begin to apply their understanding of cursive handwriting components such as how the letters are joined by connectors, how the letters and words are spaced, and how the letter size affects the visual interpretation of a letter (e.g., the letters i, e, and l can look very similar if formed to the same height).
