Knowledge and Skills Statement

Developing and sustaining foundational language skills: listening, speaking, reading, writing, and thinking--self-sustained reading. The student reads grade-appropriate texts independently.

Observe students and take anecdotal notes during small-group or independent reading opportunities. Students will be assessed based on their individual ability, rather than comparing each to other students in the class. A teacher can observe students’ stamina with reading and their ability to self-select a text.

Self-selecting is the act of the student choosing the student’s own book to read based on the student’s interests. It allows the student an opportunity to apply skills learned in other literacy lessons, exposes the student to a broad range of books, and helps the student analyze and understand why reading choices are made.
A second-grade student who can focus on the text in front of the student with little to no adult assistance is exhibiting self-sustained reading. The focus of this SE is to encourage students to explore books independently and practice fluency and comprehension skills on their own.
