Differentiation
For a student who needs additional support:
A teacher can provide explicit instruction in words with one sound-spelling pattern before moving on to words with multiple sound-spelling patterns. Additionally, a teacher may choose to monitor specifically which sound-spelling patterns a student has mastered in order to provide the most strategic instruction to the student.
For a student who has mastered the SE:
A teacher can present words for a student to spell with more advanced sound-spelling patterns.
