Knowledge and Skills Statement

Developing and sustaining foundational language skills: listening, speaking, discussion, and thinking -- oral language. The student develops oral language through listening, speaking, and discussion.

Ask students to lead collaborative work in groups to complete a project. Provide guidance and parameters as students create a framework for the project and set goals and deadlines. During the collaborative work, students should set and keep time limits, take notes, and participate in discussions and negotiations. Each student should have a turn at facilitating a group vote on key issues throughout the project. A teacher may wish to create a rubric of how the product and collaborative work will be evaluated.

Students should be able to interject, build upon others’ comments, respectfully disagree, take notes, propose solutions, and vote on key issues independent of teacher intervention.

Students should understand that collaboration in discussion requires both listening and speaking, following established norms and procedures, and interacting courteously with others, especially when considering differing points of view or accepting/providing constructive feedback. Students should have opportunities to participate regularly in discussions with groups of various sizes and types and in differing roles.
Students should consider a task and its components and how to best execute the steps necessary to achieve a desired outcome. Students should know how to outline a task in a way that clearly defines the goals and deadlines in order to ensure other participants are aware of the plan of action.
