Knowledge and Skills Statement

Developing and sustaining foundational language skills: listening, speaking, discussion, and thinking -- oral language. The student develops oral language through listening, speaking, and discussion.

Use a rubric that has a scale of 1–4. The rubric numbers can also be tracked on a checklist.

Sample Rubric:

1) The student is unable to complete the task.
2) The student completes the task inconsistently, with adult assistance.
3) The student completes the task consistently, with adult assistance.
4) The student completes the task independently and consistently.

Social communication refers to the verbal and nonverbal skills we rely on to engage in social interactions. Students in kindergarten should be able to greet others, initiate conversation by introducing themselves, and articulate needs and feelings clearly. Students must be able to understand the difference between needs and wants as well.
