Knowledge and Skills Statement
Response skills: listening, speaking, reading, writing, and thinking using multiple texts. The student responds to an increasingly challenging variety of sources that are read, heard, or viewed.
Demonstrated Proficiency of ELA.K.6.B
Ask students to complete a story map or reading response sheet or to draw/write a reflection in a notebook as a response to a text. Pose questions to initiate a response.
Example Questions:
- What does the story make you think of or remember?
- Did you like the story? Why or why not?
- What was your favorite part of the story?
- Who was your favorite character in the story?
- Tell me about a part of the story or what happened in the story.
- Why should someone read this story?
- Would you recommend this story to a friend? Why or why not?
- Is there anything you would want to say to a character?
- Is there anything you would want to tell the author?
Notes:
- Student responses will vary, and degrees of student ability will vary as well. When assessing this SE, focus specifically on whether the child can respond to a text in a logical manner.
- The quality of the response will be dependent on where the student is developmentally. By the end of kindergarten, all students should be able to respond to a text orally, with illustrations, and with writing.
