retell texts in ways that maintain meaning;

Knowledge and Skills Statement

Response skills: listening, speaking, reading, writing, and thinking using multiple texts. The student responds to an increasingly challenging variety of sources that are read, heard, or viewed.

Have students draw pictures of what happened in a story and put them in the correct order.

A teacher can evaluate responses with a rubric.

Sample Rubric:
1) The student is unable to retell the events in a story without adult assistance.
2) The student retells the events in a story, but not in any order.
3) The student retells all key events in a story, in chronological order, but does not use transition words.
4) The student retells all key events in a story, in chronological order, using transition words.

Notes:

  • A teacher should assess whether students can retell what occurred in the story in chronological order and with sufficient detail. Sufficient detail would be explaining the characters in the story, identifying setting, and telling what the problem was and how it was solved.
  • Retell requires more than just stating the main idea; it requires students to paraphrase what happened in their own words.
Retelling is not providing a verbatim report but an effort to identify and describe the essential information of a text. When students are asked to retell a story, they are expected to recall the key ideas and supporting details in chronological order.
