After reading a story, ask the student to draw the setting. Then, have the student describe the setting.
The range of responses can vary, so it is helpful to have a simple rubric to determine mastery of the skill.
Sample Rubric:
1) The student is unable to name the setting.
2) The student names the setting but is not able to describe the setting.
3) The student names the setting and describes it with adult assistance.
4) The student names the setting and describes it in detail with little or no adult assistance.
