Developing and sustaining foundational language skills: listening, speaking, reading, writing, and thinking--beginning reading and writing. The student develops word structure knowledge through phonological awareness, print concepts, phonics, and morphology to communicate, decode, and spell.

Phonological awareness is the ability to detect and manipulate the sound structures of spoken language, including recognizing differently sized sound parts (i.e., phrases, words, syllables, phonemes) and manipulating those parts (i.e., blend, segment, delete, add, and change).
Spoken words change both their structure and meaning when specified syllables are added, changed or removed. For example, when the syllable ti is added to the middle of the word gato, the word changes to gatito. Also, if the syllable pe in the word pelo is changed to ve, the new word is velo. In the following example, removing the syllable rio from the word horario results in the word hora.
