Knowledge and Skills Statement

Inquiry and research: listening, speaking, reading, writing, and thinking using multiple texts. The student engages in both short-term and sustained recursive inquiry processes for a variety of purposes.

As students work through an inquiry project, meet with each one individually to review the major question and secondary set of questions. Provide feedback and offer possible revisions to their inquiry questions or areas to further the research.

For this assessment, students refine the focus of their research question throughout the research process. For example, students may begin with a general question and, after initial research prompts more specific questions, they may choose a more specific topic.

The major research question is the specific question that students should try to answer through their research. Students may start with one version of the question and refine, or narrow, its focus throughout the research process. For example, students may begin with a general question such as “What kind of government was practiced in Classical Greece?” After initial research prompts more specific questions, students may choose to modify the major research question to “How did the government of Classical Greece influence government in the United States?”
