Demonstrated Proficiency
Observe students when using keyboards. Ask each student to demonstrate proper hand and body position when keyboarding. Continue to observe students over time to determine if students can maintain proper positioning. Demonstrate both proper and improper hand and body positions and ask students to categorize them as "correct" or "not correct" positions.
Examples of correct ergonomic positions or techniques are listed below. Use these examples as a basis for creating "not correct" positions.
- feet are supported by the floor or foot rest;
- the back is supported by a chair;
- knees and hips are generally parallel to the floor;
- hands, wrists, and forearms are straight;
- head is pointed forward and straight; and
- hands are placed on the matching side of the keyboard (I.e., left hand is on the left side of the keyboard).
