Knowledge and Skills Statement

Multiple genres: listening, speaking, reading, writing, and thinking using multiple texts--genres. The student recognizes and analyzes genre-specific characteristics, structures, and purposes within and across increasingly complex traditional, contemporary, classical, and diverse texts.

Use an observational checklist or anecdotal notes in the whole group or a small group to document whether students can recognize characteristics of persuasive text and state what the author is trying to persuade the reader to think or do. Consider using prompts to assist students.

Examples of adult prompts:

  • This book seems like it is trying to get us to do something. Do you know what type of text does that? (provide informational, persuasive, or fiction as options if necessary).
  • The book seems like it is trying to convince us to go to bed on time or to make us believe getting sleep is important. I wonder what kind of book this is.
  • This book is trying to persuade us to do something, what is it trying to get us to do?
  • I notice this book is listing a lot of opinions about _______. What do you think the author is trying to do? What are the opinions trying to get you to believe?
  • The author is telling us again that we should go to bed when our parents tell us to. The author wrote that again on this page (flip back to the page). I wonder what the author wants us to do.
A persuasive text is a text written with the intent of convincing the audience to adopt a belief and to move to action by appealing to emotions, reason, or values.
